Decompose a visual novel and every part lands in the cluster AI has near-solved: style-locked 2D illustration and backgrounds, branching dialogue, worldbuilding, voice acting, music, and a save/menu shell. There is no real-time feel to tune, no netcode, no level design — the things that gate every hard genre are simply absent.
That makes it the most completely automatable commercial game format that exists. A single non-specialist can now generate the art, voice and prose of a competent visual novel in a weekend. Which means the remaining human job is taste: which 50 of 500 generated portraits to keep, and whether the writing has a soul. The bottleneck moved from production to editorial.
Interactive fiction (1.83) and point-and-click (1.94) sit just behind it for the same reason — they're writing-and-art genres with a thin systems layer. Point-and-click only avoids the very bottom because of one ingredient: puzzle design, a 4.
A note on the score. AI-build difficulty is our own editorial assessment of current tooling, not a measurement — "buildable" means the labour collapses, not that the result is automatically good.
