The marketplace moved to UE5; the catalogue didn't

Ask whether the Unreal asset marketplace has moved to UE5 and you'll get a shrug. Some people will say it's done. Some will say UE4 is still everywhere. Both are right, which is the interesting part. So rather than settle for a vibe, we measured it: every version-tagged listing in the catalogue, and every new release coming in behind them.

The headline is two numbers that don't agree. Among recent new releases, 93.2% target UE5. Across the version-tagged catalogue as a whole, only 53.3% do. The flow has converted. The pool hasn't.

That gap is not noise. It is, in plain terms, a backlog — and a map of where the easiest products on the marketplace are hiding.

The flow has already moved; the pool is dragging behind it

Think of the catalogue as a body of water and new releases as the river feeding it. The river is almost entirely UE5 now: 93.2% of recent new listings target UE5, and the figure keeps climbing. Out of every hundred new things shipped, fewer than seven still lead with UE4.

But the pool fills slowly. A marketplace that has been accumulating listings since the UE4 era carries all of that history forward. So even with the river running clean, the standing catalogue is only 53.3% UE5. The remaining 46.7% of version-tagged listings are still UE4.

The distance between those two figures — 93.2% in the flow, 53.3% in the pool — is just under forty percentage points. That is the size of the lag. It is the part of the marketplace that the engine transition has already passed by but not yet replaced.

Sit with that for a moment. Almost half of the version-tagged catalogue is built on the engine version that new sellers have, in practice, already abandoned.

It is tempting to read 'UE4' as 'old and dead.' That reading is wrong, and the mistake is expensive.

A listing that has survived in the catalogue on UE4 has done something most listings never manage: it got made, it got found, and it stayed. The marketplace is brutally top-heavy — most of what ships surfaces for no one. So a UE4 product still standing is not a relic. It is a product with a track record. The demand was real enough to keep it alive through the entire transition.

That is what makes the 46.7% different from a pile of dead inventory. It is a shelf of things that already worked, attached to an engine version the rest of the market is quietly leaving. As studios upgrade their own projects, that shelf gets thinner in relative terms every single month — not because the products got worse, but because the UE5 side of the catalogue keeps growing around them.

That is an opening, not a problem.

The buyers are already telling you which version they need

You don't have to guess at whether this demand is real. Buyers say it out loud, before they pay.

Compatibility is the single thing buyers worry about most on this marketplace. Not price, not polish — compatibility. The recurring question on listing after listing is some version of the same anxiety: will this work on the engine version I'm actually on? People aren't asking it idly. They're asking because they have a project, a deadline, and a specific engine version they cannot easily leave.

So you have two facts pointing at the same conclusion. There is a large body of UE4 content with a demonstrated track record. And there is a steady stream of buyers asking, in the open, for support on the version they're stuck on. The product and the buyer already exist. What's missing is the bridge between them — a clean UE5 build of something that already proved it could sell.

The fastest products to win are old winners, not new ideas

Here is the part most sellers get backwards. They treat a new product as a search for a new idea. The data suggests the opposite move.

Inventing a new idea means betting on demand you can't see yet. Rebuilding a proven UE4 winner for UE5 means inheriting demand that already showed up — and then removing the one objection buyers keep raising. You are not guessing what the market wants. You are taking something the market already bought and handing it back on the engine version it now runs.

Do it properly. A clean UE5 rebuild is not a recompile and a re-upload. It is the chance to fix what the original got wrong: tidy the structure, write documentation that actually answers the compatibility question up front, and state the supported engine versions plainly on the listing. That last point matters more than it sounds. With a median listing price of $19.99 and only 3.1% of the catalogue given away free, these are low-consideration purchases settled on the listing page in seconds. Nobody emails you first. Being found and being trusted at a glance is the whole game — and 'supports the version you're on, here's the proof' is one of the most trust-building things a listing can say.

The backlog, in other words, isn't a problem the marketplace needs to clear. It's a queue of pre-validated work, and most of it is unclaimed.
